ABOUT THE RESIDENCY
ESPACIO ROJO’s residency is part of EMPACT project and aims to facilitate the creation of new artworks that creatively respond to the wider themes of empathy and sustainability through the promotion of mobility of artists within Europe.

We are looking for diverse creative models of thinking, researching, making and acting that imaginatively engage with current urgencies – environmental, socio-political and/or cultural.
We invite applicants to explore critical questions and processes inorder to produce sense and make work, involving human and non-human agents and parameters with the capacity to endorse care and empathy within our livedworlds.
ESPACIO ROJO’s residency (16 September – 29 September 2023) will be on the theme “Nature, Health and Care” and in the urban environment of Madrid, Spain, that seeks to develop new ways in which contemporary art practice can make interventions in a wide range of ecological contexts and extend the waysin which art, empathy and sustainability is understood.
Artists will be able to facilitate empathic and sustainable art creation on the theme “Nature, Health and Care» in the urbanenvironment with vulnerable groups for social inclusion and change in collaboration in diverse sites, scales and cultural institutions to be confirmed.
During their stay, residents will have the opportunity to explore Madrid’s cultural heritage, get inspired by the beauty of the river and mountains in thes urrounding areas, and get to know the local artistic communities and the local lifestyle.
UNIQUENESS OF THE PLACE
Madrid is one of the oldest cities in Europe. Magerit, ‘land rich in water’. This is how the Arabs called this area on the central plain of the Iberian Peninsula, close to Sierra de Guadarrama, where King Phillip II of Spain later established the royal court. Later on, it grew into the big city that’s come down to us.

It is an influential cultural center and has museums of international reference, including the Prado Museum, the Reina Sofía National Art Center Museum, the Thyssen-Bornemisza and CaixaForum Madrid. In 2021, the Paseo del Prado and Buen Retiro, landscape of arts and sciences was included in the list of World Heritage Sites by Unesco.
EXPECTED PROFILE OF ARTISTS
The call is opened to artists working in a range of contemporary visual arts media, including digital media, film and video, contemporary clay, sound, installation and urban art.
Applicants must be above the age of 21. Artists will be asked to state a preferred choice of residency venue.
Eligible applicants are individuals who are taxpayers in one of the project consortium countries, (Bulgaria, Cyprus, Germany, Greece, Italy, Slovenia, and Spain).
The international jury consists of members from each partner institution. The selection criteria include originality, feasibility, and overall artistic quality of the proposals. Successful candidates are provided the space and critical context to push forward exciting artworks and thinking models of re-learning to co-exist in empathetic environments and to produce sophisticated ecologies of shared futures.
EXPECTED RESULTS
During the residency, the resident will be expected to work on a work and deliver a two-hour presentation about their artistic practice/result to the public. Selected artworks will be shown in an exhibition at the Vorres Museum (Athens).
LOGISTICS
Travel, accommodation, subsistence: ESPACIO ROJO (through EMPACT project) will cover:
- Travel to and from Madrid (up to 800 EUR), the use of trains is encouraged, when possible, to limit emissions, flights are economy class only – receipts to be provided. The nearest airport to Espacio Rojo’s headquarters is Madrid airport.
- Accommodation (for the residency period – 12 nights max.) is arranged by ESPACIO ROJO.
- Per diem for the 12 days residence arranged by ESPACIO ROJO.
- Small production costs (up to 1000 EUR) per artist.

Intellectual property on the work, created during the residence (including images, videos, files, etc.), belongs to the respective artist but is expected to be providedto ESPACIO ROJO and EMPACT project free of charge for dissemination and communication purposes.
APPLICATION
Candidates are asked to submit their CVs (up to 4 pages), portfolio of recent creative projects (up to 6 pages, including illustrations) and a short proposal for their project/relevant ongoing research that relates to the themes of empathyand sustainability and to the preferred residency host institution (up to 500 words).

Las residencias artísticas de ESPACIO ROJO abordarán el tema “Naturaleza, Salud y Cuidados” en la ciudad de Madrid, España en un entorno urbano con grupos vulnerables, donde lo que se busca es desarrollar nuevas prácticas de arte contemporáneo bajo un contexto ecológico y abarcar los conceptos de arte, empatía y sostenibilidad.
Durante su estancia, los residentes tendrán la oportunidad de explorar el patrimonio cultural de Madrid, inspirarse en las particularidades de una ciudad cosmopolita, y conocer las comunidades artísticas locales y el estilo de vida.

SINGULARIDAD DEL LUGAR
Madrid es una de las ciudades más antiguas de Europa. Magerit, ‘tierra rica en agua’. Así llamaron los árabes a esta zona de la llanura central de la Península Ibérica, cercana a la Sierra de Guadarrama, donde más tarde el rey Felipe II de España estableció la corte real. PERFIL ESPERADO DE ARTISTAS
La convocatoria está orientada a artistas profesionales y emergentes de cualquier disciplina artística relacionada con medios de artes visuales contemporáneas, incluidos medios digitales, cine y video, arcilla/cerámica contemporánea, sonido, instalación y arte urbano.
Los solicitantes deben ser mayores de 21 años.
Los artistas que deseen participar deberán ser residentes en uno de los países socios del proyecto (Bulgaria, Chipre, Alemania, Grecia, Italia, Eslovenia y España) y elegir el lugar de preferencia de residencia.
Habrá un jurado internacional compuesto por miembros de cada institución asociada. Los criterios de selección incluyen la originalidad, la viabilidad y la calidad artística general de las propuestas.
A los candidatos elegidos se les proporcionará el espacio de creación y el contexto crítico para producir obras de arte y modelos de pensamiento enfocados en re-aprender a coexistir en entornos empáticos y crear producciones ecológicas.
RESULTADOS PREVISTOS
Durante la residencia, se espera que el residente trabaje en una obra y haga una presentación de dos horas sobre su práctica/resultado artístico al público.
Las obras de arte seleccionadas se mostrarán en una exposición en el Museo Vorres (Atenas).
LOGÍSTICA Viajes, alojamiento, dietas:
ESPACIO ROJO (a través del proyecto EMPACT) cubrirá:
- Viajes desde y hacia Madrid (hasta 800 EUR), se recomienda el uso de trenes, cuando sea posible, para limitar las emisiones, los vuelos son solo en clase económica; se deben proporcionar los recibos. El aeropuerto más cercano a la sede de Espacio Rojo es el aeropuerto de Madrid.
- Alojamiento (para el período de residencia – 12 noches máx.) lo gestiona ESPACIO ROJO.
- Manutención por los 12 días de residencia.
- Gastos de producción (hasta 1000 EUR).
Descargo de responsabilidad:
Las actividades al aire libre, como caminar, caminar, nadar y las condiciones climáticas, mientras forman parte de la residencia, pueden implicar un grado de riesgo. Los organizadores no se hacen responsables de las lesiones o pérdidas que puedan ocurrir durante estas actividades. Se requiere un seguro de salud (además de cualquier otro seguro que las personas puedan elegir) para ser elegible para participar.
La propiedad intelectual de la obra, creada durante la residencia (incluyendo imágenes, videos, archivos, etc.), pertenece al artista respectivo pero se espera que sea proporcionada a ESPACIO ROJO y al proyecto EMPACT de forma gratuita para fines de difusión y comunicación.
SOLICITUD
Se solicita a los candidatos que envíen su CV (hasta 4 páginas), un dossier de proyectos creativos recientes (hasta 6 páginas, incluidas las ilustraciones) y una breve propuesta de su proyecto/investigación que se relacione con los temas de empatía, sostenibilidad y cambio climático, y mencionar la institución anfitriona de residencia de su preferencia (hasta 500 palabras).
